WordPress block editor demo: Go on, change something.

This is WordPress’s block editor, the real one, running in your browser with a sample page to play with. No install, no login. Rewrite a headline, swap a photo, add a block, and see what editing your site would feel like.

The real WordPress editor, running in your browser

What you’re looking at

  • The real editor.

These are WordPress’s own editor packages, the same code that runs inside every WordPress dashboard, with its core blocks. Only the frame around them is ours.

  • What a real site adds.

On your site the canvas wears your theme, the inserter holds your own blocks and patterns, and images come from your media library. Here there’s a stand-in theme and a few photos of our studio.

  • It stays with you.

Your changes save to this browser as you go, and nowhere else. No account, nothing sent to us. Start over puts the sample page back.

Things to try.

  • Type / on an empty line, then a block’s name: “/image”, “/columns”, “/quote”.
  • Select some words to bold them, link them or change their colour from the toolbar.
  • Click a block, then use Settings (top right) to change its colours, size or layout.
  • Move a block with the arrows in its toolbar, or drag it by the handle.
  • Open List view (the stacked lines, top left) to see the page’s structure and jump around it.
  • Undo with Ctrl+Z (⌘Z on a Mac). Preview shows the page without the tools.

Questions

The editor, explained.

  • Yes. It’s built from Gutenberg, WordPress’s own open-source editor packages, running in your browser with no WordPress install behind it. What it can’t do is anything that needs that install: publishing, menus, the media library, plugins.

  • Close to it. A real site adds the WordPress dashboard around the editor, your theme’s fonts and colours inside it, and your own custom blocks and patterns in the inserter, so the blocks match what your team actually publishes.

  • No. The editor runs entirely in your browser and saves to this browser’s storage. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and there’s no account.

  • Yes, images up to 2 MB, from an image block or the inserter. They stay in this browser with the rest of the page. Bigger files, video and audio need a real media library.

  • Blocks that read from a WordPress site, like menus, post lists, comments and embeds, are left out, because there’s no site here for them to read from.

  • It works, but WordPress’s editor is made for bigger screens and so is this demo. On a phone the panels open over the page. A laptop or tablet gives you the full picture.

  • WordPress and its editor are free software under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. The licence and the full source of this demo are linked under the editor.
